People who beleave the story say that the celtic name “Benacus” has been replaced in the medieval lwith the german name “Garda”. We prefer to believe the legend, telling uns a love story between the water god Benacus and the mountain nymph Engadina. The legend says that the young Benacus left the ocean to go around the world. His trip leaded him in the magic world of Monte Baldo where lived the beautiful nymph Engadina between mountains and little lakes. Benacus fell in love immediately with her blue hair and kidnapped her from her home. Because she missed so much her little mountain lake, Benacus promised her to give her like present a much bigger lake and ramed his trident into the rock. Suddenly flowed clear water from the rock into the canyon and Benacus let it dam up to a hugh lake. Happy about that, Engadina surrendered with Benacus in the deep lake giving the deep blue colour of her hair. They gave the name Garda to their son.
