The hermitage San Giorgio (Bardolino, Verona) was established in 1663. The construction work went on during the whole 17th century, and finished with the building of the church in 1704. After the period of oppression of Napoleon in 1810, the hermitage has been abandoned and until 1885 some farmer families lived there.
After that, a community of Camaldolensians turned back to stay there. The monk community welcome everybody in this place, kept in faithful memory of the whole area. The visitors are requested to respect the first principle of this place of peace, silence and reflection. Therefore the hermitage could never be turned into a tourist attraction.
Also for this reason, visitors can’t enter in the buildings where the monks are living and working. You can arrive there making a marvellous walk from Bardolino, in the middle of woods and vineyards.
