The diversity of climate and vegetation of Monte Baldo are evident when travelling along the trail from lake Garda to the summits:
It starts with an evergreen belt of Mediterranean type , then passes to oak and chestnut woods, majestic beeches and finally to rich associations of pinus mugo. In the highest parts of the area the plats disappear to make place for plants of the grass family.
Known as ”Hortus Europae” monte Baldo was visited by famous naturalists and botanists. During the Ice Age, the highest part of the mountain range energed from the glaciers, offering refuge for types of flora and fauna that had disappeared elsewhere and giving origin to the endemic: floral species denominatedby the adjectiv “baldensis” to indicate that they were discovered for the first time on Monte Baldo or are exclusive to this mountain, orchids in particular. There also be found medical and aromatic plants.
Monte Baldo is rich with microfauna, there 960 species of butterflies, beetles and insects. The superior fauna includethe white partridge, capercaillie, hares, squirrels, foxes, badgers, marten.. the deer, marmots and the chamois for some year now have taken up resedence.
